Our Story

BUILDING BUWUNGA’S FUTURE

In Uganda's Buwunga village, the PICC is working to transform a community marked by hardship and limited access to basic services. Since 2017, initiatives like providing clean, fresh drinking water to residents, revitalizing the primary school, and introducing critical health/dental care and learning programs have made a marked impact. Our vision is a Buwunga where every child thrives—supported by a robust network of education and opportunity.

From Desperation…

Lake Victoria’s fishing communities rank among Africa’s most vulnerable and marginalized. They grapple daily with extreme poverty, heightened HIV rates and restricted access to essential services; this harsh reality leaves many children stranded in a cycle of desperation, lacking education and facing bleak futures steeped in substantial health and societal challenges.

In Buwunga—a village in Uganda's Mukono District—the nearest health facility is a strenuous ten-mile journey away. Education is limited to rudimentary learning for the youngest of children, and hope is a scarce commodity.

…to Determination

In 2017, the men and women of Buwunga chose to rewrite their story. United in their cause, they formed the Buwunga Community Health and Education Association (BCHEA). Alongside the PICC, efforts were made to rejuvenate their community from the ground up—nurturing economic stability and promoting physical, social and spiritual wellness.

Together, we have breathed life back into the primary school—ensuring consistent operations, providing essential school supplies, sustaining teachers through secure salaries, and nourishing young minds through a school feeding program.

But this is only the beginning. We envision a Buwunga where every child’s potential is recognized, where health is a right—not a luxury—and where the cycle of despair is replaced with circles of support, education and opportunity.

EMPOWERING UGANDA

A Community Comes Together

In 2017, men and women from Buwunga came together to form an association to address the poor health, lack of opportunity and general hopelessness in its people. The Buwunga Community Health and Education Association (BCHEA) was established and its partner—the PICC—was founded to help transform their community and improve economic, physical, social and spiritual well-being.

To date, we’ve been able to regulate the operations of the primary school, provide necessary school supplies, secure salaries for the teachers and develop a school feeding program.

But there is so much more to do.
